Research efforts over the last few decades have led to the discovery of the different characteristics and capacities inherent in amnion and chorion membranes, such as anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-scarring, antimicrobial, angiogenic, and cell recruitment leading to tissue repair and regeneration.
The Science behind Amniotic Allografts
Amniotic membrane skin graft is a product derived from the innermost layer of the placenta, known as amnion.
Amnion: This is the inner layer of the fetal membrane. It contains anti-inflammatory, anti-scarring, and regenerative factors. It provides a natural barrier and protective covering that reduces inflammation, and encourages the growth of new skin cells, while minimizing the risk of rejection.
Chorion: This is the outer layer of the fetal membrane and contains more fibrous tissue. It can be used alongside amnion, providing structural support and acting as a scaffold for tissue growth. However, the chorion is less commonly used alone in skin grafting, as the amnion’s regenerative qualities are more sought after.
