Layers of Amniotic Membrane

Amniotic membrane skin graft is a biomedical product derived from the innermost layer of the placenta, know as amnion.

Amnion: This is the inner layer of the fetal VLU membrane. It contains anti-inflammatory, anti-scarring, and regenerative factors. It provides a natural barrier that promotes tissue healing, reduces inflammation, and encourages the growth of new skin cells. Encourages rapid healing while minimizing the risk of rejection. ​​

Chorion: This is the outer layer of the fetal membrane and contains more fibrous tissue. It can be used alongside amnion, providing structural support and acting as a scaffold for tissue growth. However, the chorion is less commonly used alone in skin grafting, as the amnion’s regenerative qualities are more sought after.​
